The Ghan

There is something deeply Australian about a train that crosses an entire continent. The Ghan — named after the Afghan cameleers who once carved a path through this vast land — runs from the tropical Top End to the red heart of the Outback and down again, connecting places that feel worlds apart yet share the same ancient light.

I have always been drawn to the idea of journey and distance, and The Ghan embodies both. Painting it felt like a way to honour not just the train itself, but the landscape it moves through — the ochre plains, the spinifex, the endless sky. The composition builds slowly, the way the outback reveals itself: gradually, then all at once.
