Steel Magnolias

To me, this is one of my most important artworks. One night, I had an absolutely crazy dream: steel magnolias stood in a glass vase, set in concrete instead of water. The next day, I ran with the idea and started painting.

At some point, I thought I should add some ladybird beetles. Rather than organic beetles, though, they would be made of polished steel, like the petals that were now rusting.

I then imagined them as part beetle, part machine. That idea led to the small ‘Entomorph’ series I painted. Once that series was established, I returned to Steel Magnolias.
