Rymill Stallions Inside - 2

Having painted a Rymill Coonawarra Shiraz some years earlier — a work that found its way to a wine enthusiast in Brisbane — I returned to this iconic label with a fresh composition in mind. This second painting is more complex than the first, layered with subtle details that reward a closer look. One friend missed the reflection of the label on the surface of the wine, catching it only on her second visit. That kind of discovery is part of the pleasure of looking.

The decanter sits at the centre of the composition, its curved glass catching and distorting the bold Rymill label, the reflection continuing up the neck of the glass. It is a painting about patience — both in the making of the wine and in the act of painting it.
