I'm a glutton for punishment — I always endeavour to make each new painting more challenging than the last. For this work, that meant filling a glass decanter with jellybeans.
It took approximately three months to complete. Each jellybean required three to four layers of paint, and the reflections within the glass — and even the subtle reflections in front of the beans — demanded techniques I hadn't previously attempted. The lamp is isolated against darkness to draw the eye directly to the subject and make the colours of the beans truly pop.
This is a highly detailed, technically demanding work that sits at the intersection of realism and whimsy — serious craftsmanship in service of a playful idea.
