Some paintings find their way to you. A Jar Full of Jaffas began as a quiet domestic moment — a Kilner jar filled with Jaffas, waiting on the bench for grandchildren who were due to pass through Armidale. What caught my eye wasn't the candy itself, but the way light behaved around it: the rubber seal catching a warm glow, the metal clip throwing a sharp highlight, the bold red lettering of the jar creating its own rhythm of colour and reflection. It was a small still life that refused to be simple.
I knew it wouldn't be an easy painting. The interplay of transparent glass, glossy plastic, and the matte surface of the jar demanded careful observation and a willingness to work slowly. That difficulty is part of what drew me to it. The painting took shape over many sessions, each layer building on the last until the surface felt alive with light.
